저는 삶이 던져오는 질문에 작업을 통해 차분히 답을 찾아가고 있습니다. 가끔 뒤통수를 통과하여 제 생각이 아닌 것 같은 생각이 들어올 때가 있습니다. 그런 순간은 빠르게 지나가기 때문에 순간을 잡아놓지 않으면 금방 흩어져 사라지고 맙니다. 그렇기 때문에 빠르게 스쳐 지나가는 영감의 순간을 포착하여 이해할 수 있는 이미지로 변환합니다. 예를 들면 음악을 듣다가, 산책을 하다가 혹은 명상하다가 알 수 없는 이미지가 떠오르면 그 순간을 놓치지 않고 메모장에 재빠르게 옮겨 놓는거죠. 저조차도 정확히 이해할 수 없는 이미지가 떠오르는 날이면 이게 내가 하는 생각이 맞는 건지 아니면 다른 차원에서 흘러들어온 생각인지 헷갈리곤 합니다.

이런 이미지들은 왜 떠오르는 걸까? 그림을 왜 그리는 걸까? 왜 살고 있는 걸까?라는 물음이 평생을 따라다녔지만 명쾌히 답변을 하기에는 어려운 질문이었습니다. 이제서야 어렴풋이 그 이유를 이야기할 수 있게 되었는데, 그림을 그리면 그릴수록 모호한 이미지들이 감정의 자화상임을 깨닫게 된 것입니다. 알 수 없는 이미지를 눈으로 볼 수 있도록 표현함으로써 아픔과 고통 그리고 영혼을 가감 없이 드러내고 숨 쉴 수 있도록 합니다. 제가 뿌리내릴 흙을 만들고 비옥하게 다지는 일이 바로 글을 쓰고 그림을 그리는 일인 거죠.

마음에 흔들리는 날엔 '충忠'을 마음에 새깁니다. 최근에야 '충忠 '이라는 단어의 뜻을 새롭게 알게 되었는데요. 충성심이라고 하여 누군가에게 충성을 다한다는 뜻으로만 알고 있던 단어였습니다. 사실 충이란 '마음 심心' 위에 "가운데 중中"으로 마음의 중심이란 뜻입니다. 즉, 충이란 자신의 중심을 잡는다는 의미입니다. 저는 삶을 살아감에 있어 요동치는 마음을 다스리고 마음의 중심을 잡기 위해 그림을 그립니다. 그림을 보시는 분들도 마음의 중심을 잡을 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다.

Through my work, I seek answers to life's questions with quiet determination. At times, thoughts that seem not my own pass through the back of my mind—like gossamer threads of inspiration, visible for a heartbeat before dissolving into the ether. I transform these ephemeral visions into tangible images, capturing them as they arise during music, walks, or meditation. On days when incomprehensible forms surface on my canvas, I question whether these creations are truly mine or whispers from another dimension.

Why do these images materialize? Why do I paint? Why do I exist? These questions have been relentless in their pursuit, refusing to yield to simple answers. It is only now that I can begin to articulate a semblance of comprehension: I perceive these nebulous images as emotional self-portraits, each brushstroke a reflection of my inner world. By making the intangible visible, I lay bare raw pain, suffering, and soul, allowing them to breathe. Writing and painting become acts of nurturing fertile ground in which I can take root, each work a seedling of self-understanding.

In moments of spiritual turbulence, I find myself returning to the concept of ‘충忠’ (choong, meaning loyalty, allegiance, faithfulness, and steadfastness). This word, written in both Korean ‘충’ and Chinese ‘忠’ characters, holds profound significance in East Asian culture. I've come to understand ‘충忠’ anew—not merely as allegiance to another, but as steadfastness to oneself. It combines ‘heart 心’ with ‘center 中,’ signifying one's inner core. Through my art, I strive to quell the tumult within and find my center amidst life's chaos. As viewers engage with my work, be it vibrant paintings or introspective sketches, I hope they too might discover their own equilibrium, their own ‘충忠’, choong — a moment of clarity in the beautiful complexity of existence.
